Taylor Swift : Fashion in Branding
Fashion in Branding
Taylor Swift is a famous artist known for her lyricism in songs but she is also known to be a smart businesswoman that is now a billionaire. She has successfully put out 8 albums that represent her different eras in music and life perfectly.
Her first album was “Taylor Swift” (2006) , she was dressed in a plain white dress in minimum makeup as a reference to a new individual in the music community. White represents the colour of innocence and purity and that synced with the message her team wanted for her debut. Innocence and youthfulness were reflected in her tight curls, sundresses, and cowboy boots.
Followed by “Fearless” (2008) remains the most awarded album in country music history, including Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards in 2010. Her style for this album consisted of sparkly fringe dresses, ball gowns, casual clothes worn by teenagers and her signature lucky number 13 painted on the back of her hand. This album really planted the seeds for her loyal fans as they felt represented in her videos by her fashion.
Next, “Speak Now” (2010) album was centered on the beautiful purple dresses on its cover. The dress, featuring delicate lace details and a flowing silhouette, reflected the fairy tale aspects of the album. A striking feature of Taylor’s wardrobe in Speak Now was her ability to incorporate fantasy with reality.
Her fourth album being , “Red” (2012) being a mix of country and pop, Swift's Red album has one of the most consistent aesthetics among her albums. Besides the obvious colour threading it together, the singer's love for all things vintage was evident throughout all of her looks. High-waisted shorts, '50s dresses, and her iconic red lip and bangs combo were all essentials of the Red era.
Following this, she put out “1989” (2014), her first full pop album came with 1989. Inspired by the golden era of '80s pop, her glittery crop tops and freshly cut bob aided her evolution to pop stardom. She experimented with various styles with animal print from tops, dresses and bottoms. Like Fearless, 1989 is the most awarded pop album by any artist in history and earned Swift her second Album of the Year Grammy.
Subsequently, “Reputation” (2017) gave us an aesthetic we'd never seen from her before. The moody style of this album was emphasized by dark lipstick, black bodysuits, and snake motifs. Most of it as a symbolism for her matters regarding the cyberbullying she had to face.
Furthermore, “Lover” (2019) album was the rainbow after the storm. Butterflies replaced snakes and pastel pinks, blues, and purples took over the dark color palette of the past. This era opened up the hidden gems that were the pastel palette . Though it might be a soft group of colours she changed the game by wearing a suit in that colour that made her look gentle yet strong. While this era was cut short by the pandemic, the colorful celebration of love was fun while it lasted.
Moreover, “Folklore” and “Evermore” (2020) Inspired by folksongs and escapism, the album's aesthetic was simple but the songwriting was some of her best. The Grammys must have agreed because Folklore earned the singer-songwriter her third Album of the Year Grammy, making her the first woman to accomplish that feat. This also opened up the cottage core trend that was going on around during the pandemic.
